Artist Biography

Billy Lovatt is a British photographer based in Cornwall. His practice explores natural landscapes and concepts of scale, isolation, and physical form. His work romanticises the natural world, detaching it from any singular or identifiable location. Through the use of spatial ambiguity, the images resist fixed interpretation, encouraging viewers to focus on form, structure, and their own perception of the imagery. Through careful attention to composition and colour, he accentuates the atmospheric qualities of any given location, highlighting the subtle shifts in light, tone, and texture that are often overlooked. This approach allows the images to be experienced beyond traditional documentation, instead prioritising atmosphere and visual identity over objective interpretation.

The work challenges traditional notions of landscape photography by integrating different locations and perspectives all within the same sequence to encourage a more emotive reading from the viewer. This process is informed by an ongoing project on protected woodland and the duality between constructed and natural beauty present in protected areas. His considered approach to assembling and sequencing images, alongside a signature visual language, creates work that encourages relationships with local nature, where meaning is formed through individual experience rather than recognition.
